About This Book

An account recounts the author's ordeal after his passenger steamer is intercepted and shelled by an armed raider, forcing passengers into lifeboats and captivity. He describes conditions aboard the raider and later aboard a captured prize used to hold prisoners, the deliberate sinking of seized vessels, daily routines and dangers at sea, and efforts to maintain morale, including a Christmas aboard the prize. The narrative follows rumor, planning, and a perilous coastal approach that ends with shipwreck, rescue by local lifesavers, internment ashore, and the author's eventual release.

"The purpose of this work is not to amuse but to instruct; to instruct us mainly with regard to those aspects of Mr. Wilson's political outlook which concern the newspaper readers of the moment."—The Times.

"How many, even among educated people, can tell you offhand how an American President is elected, what is the difference between a Republican and Democrat, or what is the position of the Governor of a State? Well, it will not be Mr. Harris' fault if the reader does not know how to answer these and kindred questions at the same time that he is following the fascinating life-story of Woodrow Wilson."—Methodist Times.
