About This Book

A collection of essays and speeches analyzes India’s postwar political crisis, criticizing reforms that preserve military and bureaucratic control and thereby frustrate genuine self-rule. It defends Muslim grievances over the caliphate and sacred places while urging Hindu–Muslim unity and mutual sacrifice. It sets out non-cooperation and swaraj as principled means of political change, explains their moral basis, and responds to objections. The volume also condemns brutal reprisals in the Punjab, calls for amelioration of the depressed classes and abolition of untouchability, and raises the plight of Indians living overseas.
