A concise, historically minded survey examines tensions between Christian belief and modern scientific discoveries, outlining the puzzles raised by evolution, geological and cosmological research, and the problem of suffering. It sets out the older orthodox positions, presents the scientific challenges that unsettled many thinkers, and then surveys theological and scientific counter-arguments, including appeals to a First Cause, teleological reasoning, and evidential responses.
