About This Book

A concise, historically minded survey examines tensions between Christian belief and modern scientific discoveries, outlining the puzzles raised by evolution, geological and cosmological research, and the problem of suffering. It sets out the older orthodox positions, presents the scientific challenges that unsettled many thinkers, and then surveys theological and scientific counter-arguments, including appeals to a First Cause, teleological reasoning, and evidential responses. Later chapters trace subsequent scientific developments and assess their implications for religious thought, concluding with an effort to reconcile faith and advancing knowledge while recognizing remaining difficulties.
