The narrative follows a rural community shaken by a mysterious fire and the arrival of a curious stranger, whose presence draws local men into confrontations with the feared Dangler family. A troubled local, convinced he once killed a Dangler, complicates events as alliances shift among figures such as Vane, Jard Hassock, Pete Sledge, and Old Dave Hinch. Episodes move through secret meetings, raids, guarded roads, and a hazardous journey into hostile country, while schemes over horses and purchases thread the plot.
