About This Book

A collection of illustrated biographical sketches and popular traditions recounting the lives and exploits of numerous highwaymen and related criminal figures. Each chapter profiles an individual or gang, narrating reputed robberies, escapes, captures, trials, and executions while contrasting romanticized anecdotes with documentary records. The author assembles ballads, prints, and local lore alongside legal and archival details to show how myth and reality became intertwined around these figures. Plates and text illustrations punctuate the accounts and underscore the interplay between popular imagination and recorded fact.
