About This Book

A compact guide to a historic New England burial ground, the work describes its topography, vantage points, and evolution from defensive fortification and watch-tower to consecrated cemetery. It catalogues graves of early colonial settlers, figures associated with the town's founding, veterans of the Revolution and later wars, and seafaring men, reproducing epitaphs and noting tombstone motifs and sculptural styles. Brief biographical notes, site-identification markers, archaeological traces, and observations on preservation and landscape context assist visitors and antiquarians alike.
