Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre

A young girl is sent to live with a reclusive elderly relative high in the Alps, where she flourishes among goats, mountain pastures, and simple rural companions. Later she is brought from the mountains to serve in a well-to-do urban household, where homesickness and cultural clashes expose contrasts between rural freedom and city order. Her openness and vitality change those around her and help create bonds that lead to a return to the Alps; the mountain environment and human kindness support recovery and growth for several characters. The narrative examines nature's restorative effect, innocence facing social conventions, and the need for belonging and community.
