A chronological regimental history traces the formation in 1778 and subsequent organization, deployments, and engagements through 1848. It documents inspections, establishment and recruiting, voyages and garrison duties, campaigns in the East Indies and southern Africa, sieges and stormings of fortresses, casualty and honour rolls, changes of title and colonels, and commemorative battle honours displayed on colours. Supplementary material includes lists of officers, succession of commanding officers, uniform plates, and footnoted references, arranged sectionally to provide a service-by-service account and administrative record.
