About This Book
The narrative continues the legendary chronicle of Greece’s passage from myth into historical memory by recounting the return of the Herakleid line in alliance with incoming Dorians, their sea invasion of the Peloponnese, and the decisive defeat of the existing ruler. It describes oracle-guided episodes such as the adoption of Oxylus as a three-eyed guide, sacrificial omens, the lot-driven partition of Argos, Sparta, and Messene, and attendant rituals and port-founding traditions. These legendary episodes are presented chiefly to explain Dorian tribal divisions, religious festivals, local institutions, and place-name etymologies rather than to record verifiable events.
