Eigil Holst, a twenty-six-year-old Copenhagen police officer devoted to criminal study, withdraws to a secluded lakeside in northern Zealand to escape city strain. There he meets an older Swedish gentleman and his young daughter; their polite intrusion breaks his solitude and sets a subtle entanglement in motion. The narrative pairs vivid natural atmosphere and social observation with the protagonist’s inward preoccupations, and unfolds across two main sections into a slowly revealed mystery centered on the dark forest lake.
