About This Book

The volume surveys Tudor governance in Ireland, tracing political and military struggles between the Crown and native lords, disputes over hereditary claims and succession, and efforts to impose English legal, religious, and fiscal reforms. It follows episodes of factional rivalry and insurrection, administrative measures such as coinage reform and Parliamentary enactments, and the campaigns of deputy governors to suppress regional power. Special attention is given to corruption and social distress in the Pale, relations with foreign powers, and the rise and fall of prominent regional leaders whose resistance and suppression reshaped local authority and produced lasting economic and humanitarian effects.
