Irish Ned / The Winnipeg Newsy

A small, enterprising newsboy works the busy streets of Winnipeg, earning his keep while leading his peers and taking pleasure in church, scout and athletic pastimes. Orphaned of his mother and later deprived of his father's support after the father's imprisonment during a labour disturbance, he is raised by a hardworking grandmother who scrubs and scrimps to keep him. The narrative follows his daily struggles and joys—picnics, competitions and camaraderie—and emphasizes resilience, generosity, and community solidarity amid urban poverty.
