Jack the runaway; or, On the road with a circus

A spirited boy chafes under a strict guardian’s refusal to fund a night out and runs away to join a travelling circus. The story follows his induction into the troupe, training to perform daring stunts, and efforts to plan and present an act while navigating backstage rivalries and accusations. Episodes include narrow escapes, lost possessions, a side-door train journey, a monkey’s escape, a storm, a rampaging elephant, and a serious fall. Through episodic adventures and setbacks he grows more resourceful and persistent, and the plot moves toward a final separation and resolution.
