About This Book

The volume gathers dozens of satirical illustrations that sketch nineteenth‑century manners, fashions, public spectacles, and domestic scenes. Each plate pairs precise ink drawing with a short caption to lampoon pretension, social aspiration, military and sporting ritual, and the absurdities of everyday life. Tone shifts between gentle comedy and sharper caricature, using exaggerated gesture and detail to expose class distinctions, gender expectations, and topical foibles. Plates are arranged episodically rather than as a continuous narrative, inviting close reading of visual jokes and social observation.
