A provincial inn on market days becomes the story's focal point, hosting bustling trade, travelers and lively villagers while revealing the building's worn grandeur. On ordinary days the tavern is mostly empty, its routines maintained by an owner and a few habitual patrons. The narrative sketches rural life through colorful portraits of merchants, household bargaining and local oddities. Alongside this social tableau, three local officials are preoccupied with the unexplained disappearance of a rector, mounting earnest and sometimes bungled searches that expose communal anxieties, procedural habit and the town's informal networks.
