About This Book
A collection of documented cultural oddities and historical curiosities that assembles verified incidents illustrating institutions and attitudes across many areas of life. Organized into themed sections on justice, heresy and the Catholic Church, tolerance, warfare, marriage, morality, decency, medicine and hygiene, honor, religion, witchcraft, relics, missions and colonialism, and authority and progress, the author emphasizes surprising or troubling examples from the past to challenge familiar notions of advancement. The essays aim to highlight continuities between past practices and putative modern innovations while intentionally stressing unpleasant or paradoxical episodes to provoke reflection on cultural development.
