Muistelma kuvaa kirjoittajan elämänvaiheita lapsuudesta nuoruuteen ja aikuisuuteen, yhdistäen henkilökohtaiset muistot laajempiin havaintoihin Suomen yhteiskunnallisesta ja kulttuurisesta kehityksestä 1800‑luvulla. Tekstissä käsitellään kaupungin ja yliopiston kasvua, sanomalehdistön ja kirjallisten seurojen toimintaa, kielen ja kansallisuuden kysymyksiä sekä teatterin, musiikin ja taideelämän heräämistä. Lisäksi kerrotaan opiskelijaelämästä, hallintoon ja sotilaalliseen läsnäoloon liittyvistä jännitteistä, matkoista kotimaassa ja ulkomailla sekä henkilökohtaisista kohtaamisista aikalaisten kanssa, jolloin yksityinen muisti kytkeytyy laajempiin yhteiskunnallisiin ilmiöihin.
