The narrative follows a Portuguese noble household as they prepare their son Fernao Magalhaes for departure to a page school in Lisbon, with his mother pinning hopes of restored family standing on his advancement while he privately resists leaving rural life. Arrival of the Serrao family and an urbane peer, Francisko, exposes class contrasts and Fernao’s awkwardness amid courtly manners. Domestic scenes emphasize daily labor, village pastimes and familial tensions, portraying the clash between parental ambition and a youth drawn to the countryside and adventure, and laying groundwork for subsequent journeys beyond home.
