Le château de Coucy

A compact monograph combines archival research and architectural survey to trace the fortress's development from ancient origins through successive medieval lords, sieges, and remodellings. The author corrects earlier inaccurate plans using manuscript evidence and new measured drawings, distinguishing thirteenth- and fourteenth-century phases and documenting the enceinte, lower court, keep, and major towers. Illustrated plans and engravings clarify stair and latrine placements, defensive arrangements, and later alterations. A historical introduction summarizes ownership and military events, while the archaeological and architectural analysis emphasizes construction techniques, spatial organization, and the sequence of interventions that shaped the site’s military character.
