Mass psychology, ideologies, and crowd impulses can therefore magnify violence and destruction, while attempts to reconcile conflicting interests create chronic instability. The work surveys causes and consequences of this imbalance and reflects on how the mismatch between intellect and sentiment shapes contemporary events.
