About This Book
A one-act realist drama set on a winter evening follows two impoverished siblings who tend to their intoxicated father in a sparsely furnished cottage. The father staggers, sings, and falls asleep, indifferent to the children's hunger and fear; the elder girl tries to shield and reassure the younger boy while searching the father's pockets and the room for food or money, finding nothing. The short piece concentrates on domestic detail and blunt stage action to portray poverty, parental neglect, the burdens placed on children, and the small, exhausted acts of care that persist amid humiliation and want.
