About This Book
A young man becomes estranged from his stern grandfather because of his late father's political legacy and drifts into the life of Paris's streets, forming ties with a band of idealistic youths and a resourceful gamin. He endures poverty, befriends an elderly pensioner, and observes the city's downtrodden while falling in distant love with a sheltered young woman. Encounters with petty criminals and a plotted arrest expose social injustice and danger, shaping his moral awakening and drawing him toward the political ferment that culminates in an impending urban uprising.
