Les Muses de la Nouvelle France

A mixed collection of poems and occasional prose that blends classical forms with colonial reportage: dedicatory odes to patrons and exaltations of the sovereign alternate with vivid lyrical descriptions of coastal shores, forests, wildlife, and the perils of seafaring. The work pairs Pindaric and pastoral conventions with firsthand accounts of settlement life, poetic farewells to departing crews, and reflections on mission and conversion, presenting encounters with local inhabitants through a European lens. Recurring themes are praise of patronage, the beauty and hazards of the transatlantic landscape, and the use of mythic allusion to frame contemporary colonial enterprise.
