About This Book
The novel follows Léonore, daughter of a baron, whose secret affair with the noble Jean de Kervilliers results in pregnancy and a threatening note that he will never marry her. When she confronts a high-ranking cleric and discovers his true identity, she is accused of sacrilege and condemned. During her public execution she goes into labor; popular compassion intervenes, sparing her life and saving the infant. The narrative weaves concealed identities, shifting loyalties, and the collision of private passion with ecclesiastical and social authority, exploring honor, deceit, and the unpredictable force of public sympathy.
