Liliom

The play follows a rough, charismatic fairground man whose passionate, unstable relationship with a young woman escalates from tenderness to jealousy and violence, culminating in a fatal act and his own death. After death he appears in a liminal afterlife where he confronts his actions and seeks some measure of atonement, while the woman and their community must live with the consequences. The drama balances everyday street realism and brisk, colloquial scenes with a poetic, allegorical treatment of the beyond, exploring themes of love, culpability, social marginalization, and the possibility of moral reconciliation.
