About This Book

The play follows a sheltered youth raised in a church tower whose fairy- and elf-like sponsors arrange gifts and provocations that send him into a sequence of episodic trials across forests, banquets, town squares, palatial courts, and a seashore, culminating in a return to a country church. Through allegorical encounters with villagers, officials, supernatural figures and personifications such as Death and saints, the work stages a satirical and moral exploration of innocence, social performance, fortune, and the tensions between private protection and public life.
