In a modest Neapolitan parlor the sudden death of a woman—apparently by poisoning—triggers a one-act domestic drama in which a magistrate, clerk, doctor, police delegate, servants, and neighbors carry out formal inquiries and trade observations. Procedural questioning about letters, the husband's absence, and household statements gradually brings out anxieties, social rituals, and concealed tensions among those present. The confined setting and compressed time highlight ritualized bureaucratic procedure, the servants' practical devotion, and the uneasy border between private mourning and public scrutiny, yielding a concentrated portrait of social decorum and the unrest beneath it.
