Er enthält ausführliche Begegnungen mit Inselgemeinschaften und beschreibt Bräuche, Zeremonien, materielle Kultur sowie Tauschverhalten und Konflikte. Die Erzählung berichtet ferner von weiteren Landungen in südlichen Archipelen, naturkundlichen Beobachtungen sowie von Reparaturen, Verlusten, Krankheit und Bestattungen. Handlungen reichen von freundlichen Kontakten bis zu gewaltsamen Zusammenstößen; der Text vermerkt auch Folgen eingeschleppter Krankheiten, Sklavenhaltung in einigen Häfen und den Tod mehrerer Mannschaftsmitglieder. Navigationstagebuch, ethnographische Schilderungen und botanisch-zoologische Notizen werden zu einer fortlaufenden Darstellung von Entdeckung, Entbehrung und Rückkehr verbunden.
