About This Book

A detailed regimental chronicle traces the unit’s formation in the 1790s through its services into the early 1900s, presenting battalion-by-battalion narratives and campaign accounts across the West Indies, Africa, the Peninsular campaign, Ceylon, Canada, and India. It records actions, casualties, leadership changes, reorganizations and amalgamations, routine garrison duties, draft movements, and descriptive memoir material. Drawn from official orders, muster returns, and regimental archives, the account reconstructs deployments, engagements, and administrative life to give a continuous, chronological record of more than a century of service.

PREFACE

This Memoir of the Services of the 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment, now 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, was originally arranged and prepared for publication, from September, 1793, “in which year the Regiment was raised,” to September, 1863, by Brevet Major Edward William Bray, who was then serving with the Regiment. The later history, from 1864 up to present time, has been collected from the Authentic Records preserved in the Regimental Orderly Room.
