About This Book

A sequence of mythic tales recounts lovers' tragedies, divine passions, and acts of vengeance that culminate in physical metamorphoses: secret and thwarted romances turn to death and plants, gods disguise themselves to pursue mortals, hubris brings punishments transforming humans into animals, rocks, or trees, and heroic feats free captives but also provoke new fates. Linked episodes offer etiologies for natural phenomena and social customs while blending dramatic narrative and lyrical description to explore change, loss, and the porous boundary between human and divine.
