About This Book

A frontier tale opens with a smuggler stranded when his wagon breaks down; after lightening his load he encounters a boy and a brigand known as Midnight Jack. Jack ambushes a passing wagon of drunken Indians, kills the attackers, and finds a bound young woman who appears dead; he believes her to be his sister and vows revenge on the Sioux. The episode establishes themes of lawlessness, sudden violence, personal bonds, and the shifting motives of an outlaw confronted by a fragile captive.
