Contested wills, secret papers found in an attic, and family rivalries force the ward to leave the ancestral home and seek refuge elsewhere, while the heir confronts legal and social challenges. Subsequent episodes at a neighboring estate and in distant towns gradually unveil a hidden mystery, shifting loyalties and revealing true characters. Misunderstandings are resolved, relationships are mended, and the principal couple are ultimately united as the old household and its fortunes undergo decisive change.
