About This Book
The narrative follows Maurice Cumming, heir to a once-prosperous Jamaican sugar estate, as he confronts steady economic decline after slave uprisings, emancipation, and the loss of protective duties. Declining crops, abandoned coffee land, and reluctant laborers leave him isolated and determined to keep Mount Pleasant functioning. Occasional visits from his wealthy but disagreeable aunt, Miss Sarah Jack of Spanish Town, introduce political and social commentary. The story portrays the erosion of colonial prosperity, the strain of changing labor relations, and the personal resilience and stubborn attachment to land amid a landscape of decay.
