About This Book

A combined travelogue and practical manual that records late 19th–early 20th-century whaling and Arctic hunting through expeditionary episodes, technical explanation, and natural-history observation. The narrative follows outfitting, ship design, harpoon-gun development, deck drills and gear, and on-site processing at shore stations, alongside descriptions of pursuing large whales and towing and flensing carcasses. The second half shifts to polar voyages and methods for hunting and skinning bears and seals, with attention to field techniques, logistical challenges, and vivid sketches of vessels, ice, wildlife and the people who work in these industries, supported by numerous illustrations.
