About This Book

A series of illustrated natural-history essays recording close observations of the plants and animals around the studio. Short chapters describe bird behavior and nesting habits — including cuckoos, cowbirds, and warblers — and the insect life that occupies doorsteps and banks, with attention to predatory beetles, digging wasps, and brood parasitism. Later pieces examine flowers, pollination mechanics, native orchids, and milkweed, combining lively anecdote with clear explanations of structure and ecological interactions, and are accompanied throughout by detailed sketches and plates.

FOOTNOTE

[A] In numerous instances observed since the above was written I have noted the larger bumblebees upon the blossom. These insects have a different method of approach, hanging beneath the flower, the anthers being clapped against their thorax at the juncture of the wings, instead of the abdomen, as in the smaller bee.
