About This Book

A sequence of observational vignettes records the city’s eccentric public life, moving between street-level social scenes—poverty, mission halls, public entertainments, and unusual fairs—and the era’s occult and pseudo-scientific practices such as mesmerism, phrenology, astrology, mediumship, séances, and spirit manifestations. Each chapter examines a particular event or group through descriptive reporting, anecdote, and skeptical reflection, sketching how popular religion, entertainment, reform efforts, and psychical curiosity intersect in urban culture. Themes include the spectacle of deprivation, communal rituals, the clash between credulity and conjuring, and attempts to harness or reform marginal populations.

And those we call "the dead" (who are not dead—
 Death was their herald to Celestial Life)—
 May soothe the aching heart and weary head
 In pain, in toil, in sorrow, and in strife.
That is a part of every natural creed—
 Instinctive teaching of another state:
 When manacles of earth are loosed and freed—
 Which Science vainly strives to dissipate.
In tortuous paths, with prompters blind, we trust
 One Guide—to lead us forth and set us free!
 Give us, Lord God! all merciful and just!
 The Faith that is but Confidence in Thee!
