Naar den equator, met een voorspel: van pastoor soldaat

This work weaves a series of vignettes—some drawn from the author's experience and others fictionalized—into a light romantic thread portraying military and colonial life in the Dutch East Indies. It begins with scenes in the Netherlands and follows soldiers and sailors on a long sea voyage toward the equator, detailing shipboard routines, storms, a mutiny, a funeral at sea, stops at Atlantic and Cape ports, encounters with seabirds and marine life, passage through tropical trade winds and the Sunda Strait, and sketches of colonial outposts and personalities the traveler meets.
