A boy named Nappy befriends another boy at the town dump; they collect found objects and ride home together. Nappy invites the newcomer to share marbles and a sister sews a bag in exchange for berry picking; during the outing Nappy discovers a young raccoon and the boys trade it for toys. The children then join forces with siblings and neighbors to stage a barn show, organizing costumes, rehearsals, trained animals, dancing twins, benches for an audience, and one friend to handle tickets as they plan and prepare various acts.
