Una introducción ofrece un estudio crítico sobre la génesis de la novela española, centrándose en el análisis de la Celestina: cuestiones de autoría, fecha, fuentes clásicas e italianas, variantes textuales, caracteres, estilo y su influencia en drama y novela. La segunda parte reúne novelas dialogadas y textos contemporáneos que ilustran temas, lenguaje, modismos, ortografía y rasgos tipográficos de la época. El volumen expone además los criterios editoriales y de transcripción empleados, respetando la ortografía original en las reproducciones (corrigiendo solo errores evidentes) y adaptando la ortografía académica en la introducción para facilitar la lectura.
