About This Book

This volume presents a sequence of natural-history accounts that describe North American bird species through field observations, anatomical notes, and illustrated figures. Entries combine descriptions of behavior, habitat, diet, and migration with practical remarks on collecting and preserving specimens, occasional travel anecdotes, and commentary on methods and collaborators. Attention to digestive anatomy and other morphological features complements repeated emphasis on careful, direct observation. Engravings and figures are used to document and clarify species traits, while personal reflections and itinerant experiences provide context for the scientific notes and descriptive entries.
