Chapter 41: THE HOMELAND HANDBOOKS
Open in WeRead

About This Book

A practical illustrated guide to English church architecture that surveys building phases from Romano‑British and Saxon origins through Norman, Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular and later Renaissance work. It identifies characteristic forms—arches, windows, buttresses, towers, spires, crypts—and interior fittings such as fonts, screens, pulpits, bells and stained glass, explaining their symbolism and evolution. Plates, photographs, a glossary and bibliography support instructions on how to examine and describe an old church, with concise pointers for dating features and appreciating structural and decorative detail.
