The narrative follows a large, simple cannoneer named Panouille, a rural foundling ill at ease among his Parisian comrades in a military battery. Barracks episodes show a pompous junior officer recruiting volunteers for a distant campaign, repeated practical jokes and taunts, and Panouille's quick temper when he feels mocked. Through these incidents the story sketches daily army routines, informal hierarchies, and the clash between provincial innocence and urban slyness. It observes how camaraderie, humiliation, and petty authority shape a man's fragile dignity, framing the events with a realist eye and touches of satirical distance.
