About This Book

The work presents the Hawaiian mythic cycle centered on the volcanic fire-queen, tracing her origin in the distant land of Kahiki and her rise as a restless elemental power. It concentrates on her passionate entanglement with a distant prince and the ensuing role of her sister Hiiaka, who undertakes hazardous journeys, faces supernatural challenges, and acts as intermediary in matters of love and conflict. Interwoven with the narrative are collected mele, oli, and pule variants plus ethnographic notes documenting regional versions, oral informants, and the processes of transmission and poetic adaptation.
