Two veteran detectives supervise the transfer of a notorious convict and are drawn into a case by an anonymous letter warning that a perfectly healthy man is about to be confined to a nearby asylum. Their investigation traces cryptic evidence such as odd postmarks, a tiny cigar fragment, and a ransom-style note made from cut print, and it touches the prisoner's circle, including a variety performer who visits him. As clues accumulate, they confront planned escapes, manipulations of institutions, and conflicting motives. The narrative follows methodical sleuthing and moral ambiguity as the detectives race to prevent an injustice and unmask the conspiracy.
