About This Book

A passenger on a steamship witnesses the sudden emergence of a volcanic island and, together with the captain and first officer, watches and debates whether charts have failed. As weather and darkness complicate observation, the observer grows determined to seize the opportunity: he proposes a secret nocturnal landing to claim the new land and urges the officers to record only what is necessary while keeping complete silence. The episode interweaves vivid shipboard atmosphere with reflections on ambition, secrecy, duty, and ideas of freedom and social order.
