About This Book

The volume reconstructs the life and milieu of an Alexandrian Jewish thinker, using biographical hints and historical context to present his family background and public roles. It surveys his corpus and exegetical method, emphasizing allegorical readings of scripture and the synthesis of Hebrew revelation with Greek philosophical concepts. Subsequent chapters analyze his theology, metaphysics, and ethical teaching, assess his relation to Jewish tradition, and trace how later interpreters received and used his ideas. The study concludes with a bibliography and references to support further research.
