BEVEZETÉS.

Midőn a hellen hadsereg Trója ellen vonult, Philoktetest, a metonai s más hadak vezérét Chryse szigetén egy kigyó úgy megmarta lábán, hogy fájdalmas sebének bűze miatt s folytonos jajveszéklésével a seregnek nagy alkalmatlanságára vált. Azért Odysseus tanácsára a szomszéd Lemnos szigetén, épen midőn egy szikla aljában elaludt, magára hagyták. E lakatlan szigeten töltött el hosszú kilencz évet, elhagyatva mindenkitől, testi és lelki gyötrelmei között. A tizedik évben Helenos jós kijelenté a görög seregnek, hogy Tróját csak Herakles nyila által veheti be; mivel pedig ez Philoktetes birtokában volt, érte küldték Odysseust, társul adván mellé Achilles fiát, Neoptolemost, hogy Philoktetest szép szerével vagy erőszakkal vigyék a táborba. A két küldött megérkezésével Lemnos szigetére, kezdődik a tragédia cselekvénye.
