A travelogue of observations made during journeys through Canadian towns and frontier regions, detailing arrival and urban life in eastern cities such as Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. It proceeds westward to the Prairies and Winnipeg, portraying farm life, cowboys, emigrant settlements, the construction and route of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and travel across the Rocky Mountains with their camps and hazards. Interspersed are interviews and sketches of public figures, reflections on colonization and immigration, commentary on Indigenous reserves and social institutions, and notes on hospitality and practicalities of settler life.
