It describes stages of inductive inquiry from discovery of proximate causes to higher generalizations and the formation and verification of theories. It surveys the main branches of physics—phenomena of force and motion, sound and light, cosmical occurrences, material composition, and imponderable agents—and reflects on the causes of the recent rapid progress of the sciences.
