About This Book
The narrative records an overland passage from western steppes through Central Asian frontier regions into Afghanistan and onward into India, combining diary entries, sketches, and photographs. It traces travel across plains and high mountain ranges, border delays, bleak plateaus and snowbound passes, and stays in cities and caravan towns, giving impressions of Kabul, Peshawar and several Indian cities. Mountain landscapes, winter hardships, local customs and architectural sights are described alongside episodic accounts of journeys by caravan and automobile. The account alternates practical travel detail with reflective observation of everyday life, topography and historic monuments encountered en route.
